Chiang Rai International airport (CEI) is situated on Thanon Phaholyotin about 10 minutes out of town. There are numerous airlines operating daily flights between Bangkok and Chiang Rai (1 hour 15 minutes) and between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai (40 minutes). The airport is mainly served by Thai Airways International, Air Asia, Nok Air, One-Two-Go, SGA Airlines.

BY BUS

Journeys from Bangkok to Chiang Rai can be made on air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned bus services departing from Bangkok�s Northern Bus Terminal (Mochit 2 Bus Terminal). The journey may take approximately 9-11 hours and is probably best made overnight.

Buses ranging from regular, air-conditioned, to VIP air-conditioned, leave 12 times daily to Chiang Rai from Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Terminal, located north of the city, opposite Carrefour. Chiang Rai is 182 kilometers north of Chiang Mai and journey takes about 4 hours.

The bus station in Chiang Rai city is located on Prasopsuk Road. Inside the main terminal building is an information deck with all the routes, departure times and prices.

BY CAR

One can drive to Chiang Rai from Bangkok, the total distance is about 820 kilometers, take Highway #1 (Thanon Phahonyothin), turn to route #32 passing Ayutthaya, Angthong, Singburi then change to route #11 passing Phitsanulok, Uttaradit and Phrae, then turn left to route #103, pass Ngao District and turn right to #1 which finally takes drivers to Chiang Rai province. One can also drive from Chiang Mai on highway #118; the journey takes about 4 to 5 hours.

BY RAIL

There is no direct train to Chiang Rai; the nearest train station is at Chiang Mai. From Bangkok, one have to take a train to Chiang Mai (travel time: 11 hours) and then take a bus to Chiang Rai (travel time: 1.30 hours). One can also take a Bangkok-Lampang train (9 hours) and from Lampang take a bus to Chiang Rai (2 hours).

BY BOAT

Chiang Rai City can be reached from Tha Thon taking a long-tail boat down the Kok River.
