Sukhothai was the first Kingdom of the Thais in this peninsula, founded in A.D. 1238. The ancient city of Sukhothai was the first capital of Siam, Sukhothai means the “Dawn of Happiness”. A famed stone inscription reads in part: “This Muang Sukhothai is good. In the water there are fish, in the field there is rice”.
The city was listed as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1991, today 193 temples are excavated and partly reconstructed; visitors can see royal palaces, Buddhist temples, dams, canals, ponds.
