Nang Yai (Shadow Puppet Plays)



Nang Yai which means “large shadow puppet” is one of Thailand's finest treasures originated the beginning of the 15th century A.D. The puppet figures are made from rattan and buffalo or cow hide perforated into different characters.

Nang Yai mostly performs episodes from Ramakien story; performances are normally accompanied by a combination of live Thai musical ensemble and a singer to provide the narrative.

Nang Yai can be found in all of Thailand for example Nang Yai is performed at Wat Khanon in Ratchaburi, Wat Sawang Arom in Sing Buri, Wat Ban Don in Rayong. Shadow Puppet Plays was a popular means of entertainment during Ayutthaya period and has influenced important Thai film directors such as Cherd Songsri and Payut Ngaokrachang.
