Buses in Bangkok

Public bus service is excellent and cheap. Although buses give you a ringside seat to observe the city, they are not the most preferred means of traveling around Bangkok. There are four types of public buses: ordinary buses, air-conditioned buses, micro-buses and the green micro-buses, the micro-buses are the preferred.

Bus service is provided by the Bangkok Mass Authority (BMTA) throughout Bangkok during 04:00 am to 11:00 pm. BMTA operated over 100 routes, served by more

than 3000 buses; the large number of routes can get confusing.

A Bus route map is available at bookshops, hotels and TAT offices; the Bus Routes & Map guide by Bangkok Guides is a good option. If you can speak Thai, you can call 184 Bus Route Hotline. The BMTA homepage has up-to-date listings of bus routes in English but no maps

In all buses excepting the Microbus, there is an employee who walks up and down the bus collecting the fare; on Microbuses, drop the money into a slot next to the driver as you broad. Keep your ticket as there are occasional spot-checks. Although traveling by bus is quite cheap and convenient, you should be careful about your belongings especially in crowed buses.
