Boats are an unforgettable way to get around the famous riverside area with its many historical attractions. A complex network of canals (khlongs) gave Bangkok the name of �Venice of the East� at a time when the main transportation way was by boat. Today most of the canals have been filled in and converted into streets, although the Chao Phraya River continues to flow unaffected. The Chao Phraya River makes an excellent way to get around, since a lot of the major tourist attractions are accessible from the river.

There are several options for getting Bangkok by boat; the cheapest and most accepted option is the Chao Phraya Express Boat which operates a habitual boat service up and down the Chao Phraya River. The basic service runs from Wat Rajsingkorn all the way to Nonthaburi with as many as thirty stops along all of the tourist sites that are on the Chao Phraya�s banks including the Grand Palace, the Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), Wat Po and the Royal Barge Museum.

The Chao Phraya Express Boat Company offers departures every 30 minutes from Sathorn Pier. The Sathorn Pier can easily be reached by traveling with the Skytrain (BTS) to Saphan Taksin station.

In addition to the express boat, there is also a Tourist Boat which is twice the price and has slower stops at a diverse subset of piers and offers explanations in English. On the opposite bank to the Grand Palace there is a network of canals ideas for exploring local Thai life along the water�s edge, a completely different side of Bangkok. Fares vary slightly according to the destination. Boats seem to come around every 20 minutes, start at 05:30 am and the last boat leaves each end at 06:00 pm.
