Wat Pho

Its official name is Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm Rajwaramahaviharn, although, is also known as Wat Phra Chetuphon and the Temple of the reclining Buddha. This interesting temple is a meditation centre and a Thai traditional massage school, you can learn about traditional Thai massage and medicine, you can also receive a true Thai massage, including yoga style postures to relieve stress and improve blood circulation.

The temple is much older than the city; Wat Po was built by Rama I in the 16th century. The compound is divided into two sections, the northern area contains the most important monuments and the southern portion is where the monks reside, it is a good place to find a monk to chat to for a while. The large grounds of Wat Pho contain more than 1000 Buddha images in total

Wat Po is considered the Thailand's first public university, King Rama III turned Wat Po into a major centre of learning, actually, visitors can see many artworks explaining principles of religion, science, and literature.

The most outstanding attraction of Wat Pho is its reclining Buddha measured 43 meter long and 15 meter high and covered in gold leaf, which is one of the most impressive images in all of Thailand. The Buddha’s feet are 3 meters long and exquisitely decorated in mother-of-pearl illustrations of 108 auspicious laksanas (signs) arrayed in 67 small squares which distinguish the true Buddha.

For a small donation, which helps to maintain the Wat, you can receive a blessing from a monk and a bracelet string to commemorate the occasion. Wat Pho also has good English speaking guides who will provide useful information, there are also astrologers and palm readers available for consultation.
